Why penalties

Streaks are decoration.
Money is a deadline.

Habit apps optimize for engagement metrics. lock in optimizes for the only metric that matters when the window opens: whether you are actually at the venue.
Without lock in
  • 01You renegotiate the rule the second it gets uncomfortable.
  • 02A streak counter does not cost anything when you skip.
  • 03The app reminds you. You ignore the reminder. The end.
  • 04By the time you are motivated, the window is closed.
With lock in
  • ->
    The rule is set before the excuse arrives.

    Venue, schedule, window, and penalty ladder are locked in advance, when you are at your most honest about what you actually want.

  • ->
    The next miss has a number on it.

    Specificity lands harder than drama. $20 next miss, $35 the one after, $50 after that, chosen by you.

  • ->
    Showing up closes the window. Skipping does not.

    A confirmed check-in inside the window resolves the day. A clear miss schedules the penalty. Borderline goes to review.

// 03
Mechanics

Three steps.
No coaching language.

The product is a tightly scoped infrastructure layer for your own promises to yourself. It does not invent the consequence. You do.
01DRAFT -> ARMED

Define the rule.

Pick the venue, schedule, check-in window, and penalty ladder. The rule is inert until you arm it.

02WINDOW / 06:45-07:15

Enter the window.

When the window opens, the app verifies that you are at the right place while the app is actively in use.

03PASS / MISS / REVIEW

Accept the result.

A confirmed check-in closes the day. A clear miss records and schedules the next penalty amount from your ladder.

// 04
Patterns

Real commitments,
not abstract goals.

These are the rule patterns members actually run. Every line below is a commitment shape: venue, schedule, ladder. Your numbers will be your own.

A record you can share.
A rule you cannot quietly rewrite.

Members can publish a public accountability record with visibility controls. Share the link with a trainer, friend, coach, or investor so the promise has somewhere to live outside your head.

Fairness / Privacy / Safety

We make it costly
to miss, not to misfire.

The whole product depends on you trusting the system with a card. These guardrails make that trust reasonable.

No charge until you arm the rule.

Drafting a rule does not authorize anything. The card is only debited after the rule is explicitly armed and the window closes with a clear miss.

Ambiguity goes to review.

Weak indoor GPS, dense-city drift, and permission failures do not auto-charge. Borderline results hold for review before any penalty resolves.

You set the ladder. We do not.

Penalty amounts are user-selected from a defined ladder. We never invent the consequence. The maximum step is visible before the rule arms.

Privacy stays narrow.

Location is checked only at the scheduled window to confirm you are there. We do not build a lifestyle tracking feed.

Everything the plan includes
  • Unlimited recurring rules across venues
  • User-selected penalty ladder
  • Monthly penalty cap controls
  • Borderline review workflow with receipts attached
  • Stripe-secured billing
  • 7-day delay for weaker edits and cancellation
  • History and check-in receipts in the app

Penalty amounts come from the selected ladder and stay visible before each rule is armed. Monthly caps still limit penalty charges, and cap reductions wait 7 days once commitments are active.

FAQ

Everything important
is supposed to be visible.

Q.01Why penalties at all?+

A rule with no cost is easy to renegotiate. Pre-committing to a real number in advance makes the consequence visible before the excuse arrives.

Q.02Where does the penalty money go?+

Lock in donates a discretionary portion of penalty proceeds to charity. Lifetime access revenue pays for the product; penalty charges remain separate from product access and are not represented as a 100% charitable pass-through.

Q.03What stops me from getting charged unfairly?+

Drafting a rule does nothing by itself. Only an explicitly armed rule with a closed window can resolve to a charge, and borderline location results hold for review.

Q.04What happens if GPS is weak?+

Weak evidence does not auto-fail the check-in. Borderline cases hold for review instead of being treated as clear misses.

Q.05Can I edit or cancel a rule after it is armed?+

Stronger edits can apply immediately. Weaker edits, place changes, schedule changes, window changes, and cancellation take effect after 7 days.

Q.06Can I share my accountability record?+

Yes. A public record can live at a shareable handle such as lockin.im/u/maya, with visibility controls for summary stats, active commitments, recent outcomes, misses, penalty amounts, and schedule detail.

Q.07What data is stored?+

The system keeps the rule details, reminders, location checks, review actions, and billing status needed to explain what happened.

Q.08How is this different from a habit app or streak tracker?+

Habit apps optimize for engagement. lock in optimizes for one event: were you at the venue inside the window.

// Final call

Set the rule.
Stay locked in.

You already know what tomorrow morning is supposed to look like. lock in turns that into a rule with a window, a venue, and a number before your future self gets a vote.
